Yesterday, I visited the Parasdham Exhibition, and the experience was truly unbelievable. I strongly recommend that anyone living in Kolkata must go and witness it for themselves.

This exhibition beautifully illustrates the power of our five senses—sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—and how they impact our life and karma.

The Lesson of the Five Senses

We all have eyes, but we can use them for both good and bad. What we choose to see directly affects our karmas. Similarly, with smell, we enjoy pleasant fragrances but feel irritated by foul ones. With taste, we love delicious food but dislike the unpleasant. Through hearing, we can listen to uplifting words or destructive ones. Each sense influences our mind and actions.

Learning from Nature

At the exhibition, I learned from the examples of trees, birds, spiders, and ants.

Trees: Four trees were shown. Some were flourishing, while others had no leaves. Yet one tree reassured the others: “Don’t worry, I haven’t broken you—I will help you.” Even without senses, trees support each other and endure hardships gracefully.
Birds: Birds do not harm plants when they build their nests. Instead, they create strong homes that reflect their vision and resilience.
Spiders: With patience, spiders weave strong webs. Their dedication teaches us the power of persistence.
Ants: Ants build complex colonies, even studied by scientists for their excellence. Despite lacking a human-like mind, their cooperation and organization are extraordinary.

These examples from nature show us how life can thrive with patience, strength, and unity—even without the restless “monkey mind” that humans struggle with.

The Monkey Mind

Our mind often jumps from one thought to another, unable to stay focused. If we train and discipline it, we can overcome illusions, negativity, depression, anxiety, stress, and frustration. Instead of being trapped by desires and distractions, we can live peacefully in every situation.

Lessons from Stories

One story I encountered described a man desperate for honey. In his desire, he ignored the dangers around him—snakes and the threat of death. Similarly, our desires blind us to reality. Just as an elephant can get stuck in mud due to restlessness, we too become trapped by our uncontrolled mind.

The Solution

Our Gurudev teaches simple yet powerful practices to master the senses:

Anulom Vilom Pranayama (5 minutes daily): Breathe in through one nostril and out through the other, calming the mind and body.
Chanting or Meditation: Choose any mantra or meditation practice that resonates with you.
Thänenam: Control your body.
Monenam: Stay silent, especially in difficult situations.
Jänenam: Learn to let go and forget negativity.

By controlling our mind, we can transform our lives completely.
