But judging by the unchanged behavior, it seems either our voices are falling on noise-cancelled ears, or the “Hi Beautiful” brigade just doesn’t speak the language of professionalism.

LinkedIn was built to foster professional growth, enable mentorship, share knowledge, and create career opportunities. But for many women, showing up here often comes with a side order of sleaze.

⛔You post a thought on industry trends and someone slides into your DMs with “You have a beautiful smile 😍.”

⛔You congratulate someone on their promotion and someone else thinks that’s a cue to ask you out.

⛔You share your writing and someone’s first reaction is not about your insights, but your looks.

⛔You just accepted some connection requests and they slid into DMs - “How are you? Where do you live? Had lunch? Are you single?”

If this were a rare case, we could laugh it off. But it’s habitual. It’s exhausting. It’s disgusting! A recent survey highlighted by Forbes revealed that over 90% of women using LinkedIn have received unwanted romantic or sexual advances. And more than one-third of those interactions turned into persistent harassment. That’s not just a red flag. That’s a whole parade.

🤳 Personal Perspective (Wit-cocktail)

As someone like me, working in the translation and localization field — where cultural context really matters, let me offer a simple suggestion:

There is no culture where “Hi beautiful” is an acceptable form of professional outreach.

(Unless you're applying to be a Shakespearean sonnet. Then, maybe.)

I’ve seen colleagues hesitate to post. Talented translators second-guessing whether their achievements will be acknowledged — or objectified. I've even had to remind a few connection requests that “networking” isn’t code for “let’s flirt.”

We should not have to sacrifice visibility for safety.

* 91% of women surveyed said they’d received sexual advances via LinkedIn.

* 40% of them said these advances escalated into persistent, unwanted communication.

* A growing number of women have admitted to limiting their public engagement on LinkedIn out of fear of harassment.

* Many have even gone as far as removing their profile photos to avoid attention that has nothing to do with their work.

💼 This Isn’t Just a Women’s Issue — It’s a Workplace One

Harassment on LinkedIn isn’t “just a message.” It’s a micro-barrier that slowly pushes professionals, especially women to disengage, shrink their online presence, and limit their participation in a platform meant to amplify voices.

In workplaces, there are some policies like POSH which enables us to raise our voice and get the issue resolved rapidly and fairly. But in social media, that is not an option. Though in both cases, having self awareness and self-control is much more important!

When women don’t feel safe or comfortable showing up fully on LinkedIn, it’s not just their voices we lose, it's valuable perspectives, ideas, innovation, and the progress toward true professional equality. The very fact that we have to pause and second-guess before posting is frustrating in itself. And truthfully, many of us have started tuning out the message inbox altogether — not out of disinterest, but exhaustion. Because when your DMs are flooded with “Had lunch, dear?” instead of meaningful collaboration, you start to wonder if it’s worth the effort. And in that silence, real opportunities to connect, grow, and build something impactful quietly slip away.

So if you're one of those people who still thinks LinkedIn is a place to test your pick-up lines, let me kindly suggest another platform. (They have apps for that — many, in fact. And some even have swiping!)

✅ What Can We Do?

1. Report It.

LinkedIn gives you the option to report inappropriate messages. Use it. Every time.

2. Support Your Network.

If someone you know speaks up about harassment, don’t scroll past. Validate, share, or comment in solidarity.

3. Normalize Boundaries.

It’s not “overreacting” to expect professionalism here. It’s the bare minimum.

4. Call It Out — Respectfully.

You don’t need to be rude. But you can be clear. “This isn’t appropriate on a professional platform” works just fine.
