What is an MVP? (And What It Isn't)

Coined by Eric Ries in "The Lean Startup," an MVP is the version of a new product that allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least amount of effort.

Think of it like this: If your ultimate goal is to build a car, you don't start by building a wheel, then an axle, then a chassis. After months of work, you'd still have nothing that a user can ride.

Instead, you start with a skateboard. It’s not a car, but it solves the user's core problem: getting from A to B. From the skateboard, you learn and iterate to a scooter, then a bicycle, and eventually, the car. Each step is a usable product that delivers value and provides feedback.

An MVP is NOT :

A buggy or incomplete product.
An excuse to launch something sloppy.
The first version of your "big" product chopped into phases.

IS :An MVP

The smallest thing you can build to deliver value to your earliest users.
A tool designed for learning , not just earning.
Focused on solving one core problem exceptionally well.

How to Define Your MVP in 3 Steps :

The key to a successful MVP is being ruthless with prioritization.

Step 1: Re-identify Your Core User and Core Problemearly adopters Look back at your validation interviews. Who are the people who felt the pain most acutely? These are your . Now, what is the single biggest problem they need solved? Don't try to solve everything at once. Focus on the #1 pain point.

Step 2: Map the Core User Journey List the basic steps a user would take to get the core value from your product. For a project collaboration app, it might be:

User signs up.
User creates a new project.
User invites a team member.
User assigns a task to that team member.

Everything outside this core flow is not part of the MVP.

Step 3: Feature Prioritization - The "Must-Have" Ruleonly List all the features you can think of. Now, be brutal. Mark each one as a "Must-Have," "Should-Have," or "Could-Have." Your MVP consists of the "Must-Haves."

Must-Have: Without this feature, the product cannot solve the core problem.
Should-Have: This is important but not critical for the first version.
Could-Have: A "nice to have" feature or a cool idea for later.

You might be surprised at how few features land in the "Must-Have" column. That's the point!
