Last week, we focused on "The Spark"—training our minds to see problems worth solving all around us. You might now have a notebook filled with frustrations and inefficiencies, one of which feels particularly exciting.

The temptation now is to lock yourself in a room, spend the next six months coding, and build a perfect, feature-rich solution.

Stop.

Does anyone actually care?

This is the single biggest mistake first-time founders make. Before you write a single line of code or design a single screen, you must answer a critical question:

This process is called idea validation, and it's about replacing your assumptions with real-world evidence. It’s the seatbelt for your startup journey, saving you from a painful crash down the road.

Why Validation is Non-Negotiable

Every startup idea is a bundle of assumptions. You assume:

The problem you identified is a major pain point for a specific group of people.
Your proposed solution would be the way they want it solved.
They would be willing to use (and eventually pay for) your solution.

Validation is the process of getting out of the building (or your dorm room) and testing these assumptions with actual potential users.

How to Validate Your Idea (Without Building a Product)

The goal is to learn as much as possible, as quickly as possible, with the least amount of effort. Here are three powerful techniques:

1. The Customer Discovery Interview

This is your most important tool. It's not a sales pitch; it's a fact-finding mission. Your goal is to understand your target user's world, their problems, and their current behaviours.

Who to talk to: Identify a handful of people who you believe fit your target user profile.
How to ask: Avoid hypothetical questions like "Would you use an app that did X?" Instead, ask about their past experiences.
Good Question: "Tell me about the last time you tried to find a part-time internship. How did that go?"
Bad Question: "Would you use my new internship-finding platform?"
What to listen for: Listen for emotion (frustration, anger, excitement). Do they talk about the problem with energy? Have they tried to solve the problem themselves, perhaps with a clumsy spreadsheet or a combination of different apps? This is a huge positive signal.

2. The Landing Page Test

This is a classic validation technique. You create a simple, single-page website that clearly explains your value proposition.

The Content: Clearly state what problem you solve and for whom. For example: "The easiest way for college students to find and manage project collaborators. Stop the endless WhatsApp chains."
The Call-to-Action (CTA): The key is a single CTA button, like "Sign Up for Early Access" or "Get Notified on Launch."
The Test: Drive a small amount of traffic to this page (you can post it on your college's social media groups or even run a small, targeted ad campaign for ₹500). The percentage of visitors who sign up is your conversion rate—a powerful piece of data that shows real interest.

3. The "Wizard of Oz" Test

This sounds magical, and in a way, it is. You present what looks like a working product on the front-end, but you are manually doing all the work on the back-end.

Example:manually Imagine an idea for an AI-powered service that creates personalized meal plans for students. To validate it, you could set up a simple Google Form where students input their preferences. You would then create a meal plan for the first 10-20 users and email it to them.
The Learning: This allows you to test if the core value proposition is compelling enough for people to use, long before you invest time and money into building complex AI algorithms.

Your Mission for the Week

Your idea lives or dies by the user. This week, your mission is to step away from the keyboard and talk to people.

Your Goal: Conduct 5-10 customer discovery interviews. Use what you learn to refine or even pivot your initial idea. Is the problem you identified a nice-to-have or a must-have?
