Modern Indian history is a captivating journey through time, marked by a series of significant events and transformations. From the glorious era of the Mughal Empire to the hard-fought struggle for independence and the subsequent nation-building process, this article explores the rich tapestry of India's history in the modern era.

The Decline of the Mughal Empire

The Mughal Empire declined rapidly after the death of Aurangzeb in c. 1707 CE. This year is generally considered as the differentiating year to separate the era of the Great Mughals from that of the lesser Mughals, also known as the Later Mughals. The decline and downfall of the empire was due to economic, social, political, and institutional factors. Firstly, the orthodox religious and Deccan policies of Aurangzeb contributed to the empire’s decline. The attempt to extend the Mughal administration over Golconda, Bijapur and Karnataka stretched the Mughal administration to a breaking point. It also laid Mughal lines of communication open to Maratha attacks so much so, that the Mughal nobles in the area found it impossible to collect their dues from the jagirs assigned to them and sometimes made private pacts with the Marathas. His failure to respect the susceptibilities of his non-Muslim subjects on many occasions, his enunciation of a policy that led to the destruction of many temples and re-imposition of jizya alienated the Hindus and strengthened the hands of the section which were opposed to the Mughal Empire for political or other reasons. It is said that by the time Aurangzeb came to the throne, the socio-economic forces of disintegration were already strong. Aurangzeb lacked the foresight and statesmanship to effect fundamental changes in the socio-political structure, or to pursue policies that could, for the time being, reconcile the various competing elements. Thus, Aurangzeb was both a victim of circumstances and also helped to create the circumstances of which he became a victim.

Secondly, the successors of Aurangzeb were weak and were not able to hold the administration effectively. Most of them were puppets in the hands of powerful nobles. The war of succession that plagued Delhi from c.1707 – 1719 CE gradually weakened the empire. After the death of Aurangzeb, the nobility assumed a lot of powers and the course of politics and state activities were guided by their individual interests. The Mughal court consisted of four groups of nobles – the Turanis, the Iranis, the Afghans and the Indian born Muslims. These groups constantly fought with each other for more power, jagirs and high offices which eventually led to the weakening of the empire. The third reason was lack of strong finances and foreign invasions. Due to the emergence of many autonomous states, the revenue resources got depleted and the continuous wars further emptied the treasury. Also, the foreign invasions of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali took a heavy toll on the imperial treasury. The Mughal army gradually became inefficient and de-motivated after losing several battles. The neglect of naval power by the Mughals also cost them dearly. Then the emergence of British and other European colonial powers and their arrival to India was the last nail in the coffin of any hope of survival of the Mughal empire. The western colonial powers were militarily and financially superior and politically informed of the Indian conditions.

Lastly, the decline of the Mughal authority gave rise to the emergence of several independent kingdoms. The later Mughal rulers were not able to militarily enforce its regulations in all parts of the empires; as a result, many provincial governors started to assert their authority. In due course of time, they gained independent status. At the same time, many kingdoms which were subjugated by the Mughals also claimed their independence. Some new regional groups also consolidated and emerged as political powers. The states that arose in India during the decline of the Mughal empire and the following century (between c. 1700 – 1850 CE) varied greatly in terms of resources, longevity and essential character. Some of them – such as Hyderabad had been in a region where there had been an older regional tradition of provincial states in the immediate pre-Mughal period too, whereas many of the other post-Mughal states were based on either ethnic or sectarian groupings – the Marathas, the Jatts and the Sikhs.

The First War for Independence (The Sepoy Mutiny) (1857)

In 1857, the Indian rebellion was a deadly and violent rebellion opposing British authority in India. The Sepoy Mutiny and the first war of Indian Independence of 1857 are two alternative names for the same event. It is regarded in Indian history as the first uprising for independence from British rule.

Subsequently to British atrocities in India, an uprising erupted in 1857. The live version of this phrase, “War brings forth the genuine face of mankind,” was viewed by millions of Indians in different regions of the Indian subcontinent. By the 1850s, the British East India Company had gained control over a large portion of India. The East India Enterprise, a commercial company that originally arrived In India for commerce in the 1600s, later evolved into military and political activity. The firm used a substantial percentage of Indian troops known as Sepoys (Sipahi) to keep discipline and safeguard urban areas. British officers oversaw the sepoys in general. Sepoys generally took tremendous pleasure in their troops throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and they were fiercely loyal to their British leaders. However, conflicts began to surface in the 1830s and 1840s. The British East India Company seized control of Indian territories if a provincial emperor died without an heir under a British practice known as the “doctrine of Lapse.” The mechanism was abused, and the firm exploited it to annex areas illegally. In the 1840s and 1850s, when the East India Company conquered Indian nations, Indian troops in the military started to feel aggrieved.

Among the major factors; race-based discrimination or social hierarchy was a prime cause of the uprising of 1857, in which Indians were being mistreated and prohibited from interacting with Westerners. The British began intervening in Indians’ religious and cultural concerns, torturing them. Firstly, the poor were adversely affected by numerous tax and revenue policies. The British government imposed and implemented several administrative regulations to extend their area. Secondly, the British expansionist policies resulted in the dissemination of unfair policies, which resulted in the decline of the authority of the Nizams & landowner dwellings throughout India. The emergence of unfair policy initiatives such as the guidelines of industry and business, informal enslavement, direct invasion and occupation, direct subservience (doctrine of lapse), and mismanagement disrupted the leaders’ aspirations until they became vulnerable to British territorial expansion.

Prominent leaders like Begum Hazrat Mahal, Ahmadullah, and Bahadur Shah Zafar & his General Bakht Khan, all from Delhi and Lucknow, oversaw their respective states. The supervision of their troops was held by Mangal Pandey of Barrackpore, Kunwar Singh of Bihar, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, Tantia Tope of Kanpur, and Raja Pratap Singh of Kullu.

As an outcome, the Indian government was immediately cleaned up because of the revolt. The British government disbanded the British East India Company to support full governmental administration over India. The introduction of the practice of engagement with Indians was yet another key effect of the revolt. Only Westerners made up the Constituent Assembly of 1853, which acted arrogantly as a national assembly. Lastly, it was the impact of the uprising on the Indian people. Cultural heritage was attempted but failed to oppose the invading alien tendencies. The monarchs and other dominant personalities had either stayed out of the revolt or had shown themselves to be inept for the most part.

The Formation of Indian National Congress (1885)

The Foundation of Indian National Congress (INC) in 1885, stands as a cornerstone in India's fight for independence and has played a crucial role in shaping the country's political landscape. Before its inception, several socio-political movements and organizations laid the groundwork for the formation of the Indian National Congress. Till 1947, there were numerous INC sessions (annual and special INC sessions) to discuss the political situation in the country and to pass resolutions on important issues. These INC sessions served as platforms for inclusive and collective decision-making and planning for the course of India's struggle for freedom. Foundation of the Indian National Congress

While many Indians had been contemplating the formation of an all-India organization for nationalist political activists, it was A.O. Hume, a retired English Civil Servant, who played a crucial role in giving the idea a concrete and definitive form. He engaged with prominent Indian leaders and collaborated with them to organize the inaugural INC session in Bombay in December 1885. Hume's primary intention in establishing and promoting this association was likely to provide a "safety valve" for the mounting discontent among educated Indians. Initially, it was decided to hold a conference in the name of the Indian National Union to be held in Poona, but the venue was shifted to Bombay due to the cholera outbreak in Poona. The first meeting was held on Monday, 28 December 1885, in Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay.

The Indian National Congress holds a crucial place in India's history, and as a result, contemporary opinions and subsequent historians have often pondered the factors that led to its establishment. Even a hundred years after its inception, this matter remains a subject of ongoing discussion among historians.

Safety Valve Theory - The theory posits that Hume founded the Congress with the expectation that it would function as a "safety valve" for the escalating discontent among Indians. This notion was endorsed by extremist leaders, including Lala Lajpat Rai.

Conspiracy Theory - Rajani Palme Dutt is credited with originating the Conspiracy Theory, which emerged from the 'safety valve' concept. According to Dutt, the INC was born from a conspiracy to quash a popular uprising in India, and he believed that the bourgeois (middle-class) leaders of India were also involved in this scheme.

Lightning Conductor Theory - Gopal Krishna Gokhale proposed the "lightning conductor theory," suggesting that the INC was an expression of politically conscious Indians' aspiration to form a national entity representing their political and economic demands.

However, the Modern Indian historians believe that the early Congress leaders utilized Hume as a "lightning conductor" to act as a catalyst, uniting nationalist forces, even if the facade of a "safety valve" was maintained.

Partition of Bengal (1905)

During Lord Curzon’s tenure as Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905, he left a lasting impact on the country’s history as it was his decision to announce the Partition of Bengal in 1905 sparked widespread protests, marking a contentious period, he did so by citing the reasons for difficulty in administration of such large area and population. 1905, Lord Curzon, the British ruler of India, decided to divide Bengal to improve governance, especially in the eastern part, which was considered poorly managed. Bengal was a large region, similar in size to France, and had a diverse population. The division sparked strong reactions: many Bengalis felt insulted and wanted the region to remain united. Rabindranath Tagore’s song “Amar Sonar Bangla” became a symbol of this unity. The Indian National Congress opposed the partition, as did most Bengalis in the western part. However, some Bengali Muslims supported the division, hoping it would benefit them, especially after Lord Curzon promised to build a university in Dhaka. Most people in India saw the partition as a British strategy to divide and control them. This led to the Swadeshi and Boycott movements, where people rejected British goods and supported local industries. The partition also deepened religious and political divides, contributing to the formation of the Muslim League in 1906. The Partition of Bengal took place on October 16, 1905, when the British divided the large province of Bengal into two parts: East Bengal and West Bengal. The British, led by Lord Curzon, did this to weaken the growing independence movement and to balance the Hindu and Muslim populations. Bengal was very large, including Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, making it difficult to govern. So, the British decided to split it into smaller regions for better management.

The Formation of Muslim League (1906)

The All-India Muslim League, founded in 1906 and was initially led by Aga Khan and ultimately by Muhammed Ali Jinnah. It was a political organisation that represented the interests of the Muslim community in British India. Its significance lies in its role in fostering Muslim nationalism and ultimately leading to the creation of Pakistan in 1947. This article aims to study in detail the origins, development, and political influence of the All-India Muslim League, tracing its impact on India’s socio-political landscape.

The foundation of the All-India Muslim League (AIML) on 30 December 1906 in Dhaka can be traced to events following the establishment of the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1885. The INC, dominated by a Western-educated Hindu elite, aimed to share power with the British Raj and push for a representative government. However, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, a prominent Muslim leader, advised the Muslim community against joining the Congress, believing Muslims would benefit more from loyalty to the British than opposition to them. This approach, focused on fostering English education for Muslims, laid the groundwork for the Aligarh Movement.

Muslim leaders such as Nawab Abdul Latif, Syed Amir Ali, and others founded cultural organisations like the Mohammedan Literary Society (1863), the Central National Muhamedan Association (1877), and Sir Syed’s United Indian Patriotic Association (1888). These groups concentrated on promoting English education and social regeneration rather than engaging in politics, addressing the educational and economic deprivation faced by Muslims under colonial rule.

The Home Rule Movement (1916-1918)

The Home Rule Movement, initiated in 1916 by leaders like Lokamanya Tilak and Annie Besant, was a significant push towards self-governance in British-ruled India. Its importance lies in mobilising Indian society on a mass scale and inspiring a new wave of nationalist sentiment that prepared the country for future resistance.

The Home Rule Movement, initiated during the First World War, marked a crucial turning point in India’s quest for self-governance and a more assertive nationalist stance. Indian leaders, disillusioned by the British government’s reluctance to grant meaningful reforms, recognised the need for a mass-based political movement to pressure the British into action. The movement, therefore, emerged from a blend of rising nationalist fervour, economic hardship, and disillusionment with the Indian National Congress’s passive approach under Moderate leadership.

The political climate of the time, fuelled by the struggles of World War I, left many Indians impoverished and eager for change. Economic strain was high, and the imperialist conflict in Europe shattered the illusion of Western superiority. In this context, two Home Rule Leagues were formed in 1916. Lokamanya Tilak led the first, covering Maharashtra, Bombay, Karnataka, and parts of the Central Provinces, while Annie Besant and S. Subramaniya Iyer led the second, which focused on areas across India, particularly Madras Presidency. Their shared aim was to promote the demand for Home Rule or self-government for India after the war, with Tilak’s famous slogan, “Home Rule is my birthright, and I will have it,” galvanising supporters nationwide.

Both leagues conducted extensive political education campaigns to mobilize Indian opinion in favour of Home Rule. Their activities included organising public meetings, setting up libraries, holding conferences, and creating a network of reading rooms that provided access to nationalistic literature. Additionally, newspapers like Tilak’s Kesari and Maratha and Besant’s New India and Commonweal helped spread awareness about self-rule and emphasised India’s contributions to the British war effort. The campaign reached new regions like Gujarat and Sindh, previously considered “politically backward,” helping the movement gain an all-India appeal.

The British government viewed the growing influence of the Home Rule Movement as a threat and resorted to repressive measures to quell it. The Defence of India Act was used to restrict activities and prohibit students from attending Home Rule meetings. Leaders, including Annie Besant, faced imprisonment, while Tilak was banned from entering Punjab and Delhi. This repression, however, backfired, intensifying nationalist fervour across the country. Protests, strikes, and mass gatherings in support of Home Rule spread widely, indicating that the Indian public was ready to challenge British rule.

The government’s repressive actions eventually led the British Secretary of State for India to announce in 1917 the promise of gradual self-governing institutions, aiming to appease the nationalists. Although this slowed the movement, the Home Rule Movement left an enduring impact. It transformed the Indian freedom movement by engaging a broader public, infusing it with new vigour, and preparing Indians for the Gandhian era of non-violent protest. The movement evolved into the Swarajya Sabha in 1920, carrying forward its ideals.

The Home Rule Movement holds a pivotal place in the history of India’s freedom struggle. It signalled a shift from elite-led protests to a mass movement, invigorating Indian politics with a focus on self-rule. The movement also influenced international opinion, gaining support from American and British leaders alike, and set the stage for the mass movements under Gandhi’s leadership in subsequent years.

Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22)

The Non-Cooperation Movement was a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience. It was launched in 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi to achieve Indian independence from British rule. Gandhi's philosophy of Satyagraha, which emphasized non-violence and civil resistance, was the driving force behind the movement.

Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of the non-cooperation movement. He called upon the Indian people to reject British rule and withdraw their cooperation from the British government and institutions. People were urged to boycott British goods and instead support Indian-made products. This step aimed to weaken the economic power of the British and promote Indian industries. Indians were encouraged to surrender their titles and honours given by the British government. This was a symbol of rejecting their authority and asserting their national pride. People were asked to peacefully protest and refuse to follow British laws and regulations. This included non-payment of taxes and non-participation in British-run institutions. Large-scale public demonstrations marked the launch of the Non-Cooperation Movement.

There were several causes which gave rise to the occurrence of Non-Cooperation Movement, those are-

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: The brutal massacre at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar took place in 1919. British troops killed hundreds of unarmed Indians. This incident served as a catalyst for the Non-Cooperation Movement.

Rowlatt Act: The Rowlatt Act was enacted in 1919. It granted the British government sweeping powers to suppress political dissent and curtail civil liberties. This repressive law also allowed for indefinite detention without trial. This caused widespread outrage among Indians and fueled the call for non-cooperation.

Khilafat Movement: The Khilafat Movement was initiated by Indian Muslims. It aimed to protect the caliphate in Turkey after its disintegration following World War I. The movement gained support from Mahatma Gandhi and other Indian leaders. They saw it as an opportunity to unite Hindus and Muslims in the struggle against British rule.

Economic Exploitation: Indians faced economic exploitation under British rule, with high taxes and unfair trade policies. These economic grievances created a sense of discontent and resentment among the Indian population.

Desire for Swaraj: The Non-Cooperation Movement was driven by the Indian people's strong desire for Swaraj. They were inspired by the principles of non-violence and civil disobedience advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi believed that non-cooperation with British authorities would eventually lead to independence.

The movement saw widespread participation from all sections of society. This included peasants, workers, students, and women. It brought people together in a united front against British rule. The movement promoted the idea of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. It encouraged people to boycott British institutions, including schools, colleges, and law courts. This non-cooperation weakened the British administration and challenged their authority. The movement awakened a sense of national consciousness and pride among the Indian masses. It instilled a spirit of unity, self-reliance, and self-confidence. It fostered a collective identity among Indians. The Non-Cooperation Movement expanded the nationalist agenda beyond the elite circles and brought it to the masses. It provided a platform for the common people to actively take part in the freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi emerged as a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement. His principles of non-violence and Satyagraha became powerful tools for achieving freedom. The Non-Cooperation Movement garnered international attention and sympathy for India's struggle for independence. It exposed the oppressive nature of British colonial rule. It also helped in gaining support from other nations.

The National Congress has demonstrated that it represents the majority of the country’s views. It can no longer be accused of representing a “microscopic minority.” The movement was likewise widespread across the country. While some locations were more active than others, few, if any, places were completely deafeningly silent in response to the call for non-cooperation. The Non-Cooperation Movement was the people’s first chance to get involved in politics and fight injustice and economic misery brought on by years of foreign domination. Despite the Malabar events, which were not repeated during the Civil Disobedience Campaign, Muslims played an important role in the movement and in maintaining communal unity. Purna Swaraj was the goal of the Non-Cooperation Movement. However, it was not achieved. Because of the Cauri-Chaura incident, in which people attacked police officers, Gandhi Ji decided to cancel it. However, it was a widespread movement that caused Indians to lose faith in the British. This movement enthralled Indians. To sum it up, we may say that the non-cooperation movement was a success. It brought India together as a nation.

Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-34)

The Civil Disobedience Movement, launched in 1930 under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, was a mass protest colonial rule through nonviolent means such as breaking the Salt Law, boycotting British goods, and refusing to pay taxes. This movement was significant as it unified diverse sections of Indian society, gained international attention, and intensified the freedom struggle.

The Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–21) laid the foundation for mass participation in India’s freedom struggle. Though it did not achieve its immediate goal of Swaraj (self-rule), it brought millions into the fold of active political agitation. The next phase, the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), emerged nearly a decade later, introducing a unique method of protest involving the violation of colonial laws. This movement aimed to paralyze the British administration through non-payment of taxes and deliberate law-breaking. The Civil Disobedience Movement started in 1930, with the launch of the historic Dandi March on March 12, 1930, led by Mahatma Gandhi to protest the British salt laws.

Main causes for Civil Disobedience Movement were –

Economic Distress – The Great Depression (1929): The export-oriented colonial economy faced a severe crisis during the Great Depression, intensifying economic hardships for peasants, workers, and businesses. The rising cost of daily goods further aggravated public dissatisfaction, creating fertile ground for mass mobilization.
Simon Commission (1929): The formation of an all-white Simon Commission to review the Government of India Act (1919) enraged Indians, sparking widespread protests. The unity exhibited during these protests revitalized Indian nationalism, which had waned after the Non-Cooperation Movement.
Emergence of New Trends: The late 1920s witnessed the growth of socialism, communism, and workers’ and peasants’ movements. A revived revolutionary movement with secular and socialist ideals added momentum to the anti-imperialist struggle.
Success of Bardoli Satyagraha (1928): The success of the Bardoli Satyagraha, led by Sardar Patel, showcased the effectiveness of nonviolent satyagraha and reestablished Gandhi as a national leader.
Adoption of Poorna Swaraj (1929): The Congress formally declared Poorna Swaraj (complete independence) as its goal, driven by leaders like Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru. This move galvanized the nation and set the stage for a broader, more radical movement.
Gandhi’s Eleven-Point Demands: Gandhi presented eleven demands to the British government, addressing issues like land revenue reduction, abolition of salt tax, and the release of political prisoners. These demands sought to unite Indians across various socio-economic strata. Lord Irwin’s refusal to accept them triggered the launch of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

The Civil Disobedience Movement began on 12th March 1930 with the Dandi March, where Gandhi and his followers marched 240 miles from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi to break the Salt Law on 6th April 1930. This symbolic act of picking up a fistful of salt resonated across the nation, sparking widespread defiance.

Major Activities in Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) were violation of salt laws in various regions, boycott of foreign goods and burning of foreign cloth, refusal to pay taxes, including land revenue and chowkidari tax, picketing liquor shops and shops selling foreign goods, women’s active participation in spinning and picketing.

As an impact of Civil Disobedience Movement, the government revenue fell sharply as imports of British goods decreased, income from land revenue, excise, and liquor taxes was severely affected, women’s active participation in protests marked a significant shift in India’s freedom struggle, boycotts of British goods found enthusiastic support, from the treaders and merchants, especially in Tamil Nadu and Punjab. Kisan Sabhas and anti-zamindar campaigns gained momentum in provinces like Bihar and Gujarat. The movement drew international sympathy, exposing the atrocities of British rule and gaining supporters for India’s cause worldwide.

The Quit India Movement

Quit India Movement was a massive anti-colonial struggle in India, launched on August 8, 1942, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, who gave the mantra of “Do or Die” during this Movement. Projected initially as the civil disobedience movement, this ‘third great wave’ of India’s struggle for freedom soon took a violent turn with the aim of ‘fight to the finish’ of the colonial empire. Gandhi, understanding the mood of the nation and the importance of individual liberties, was even prepared for riots and violence caused by the Quit India Movement as he thought it morally correct to defend against the state’s organised violence. It is also known as the “August Kranti Movement,” Quit India Movement was more a rejection of British rule than a traditional Satyagraha and influenced the unprecedented and tumultuous events for the next five years in Indian history.

The movement was launched during World War II when Britain expected India’s full support. However, the Indian National Congress demanded independence before contributing to the war effort. The British government, in 1942, had sent Cripps Mission to India with an offer of limited self-government after the war. The proposals were rejected by the Congress as inadequate. After the failure of the Cripps Mission, Gandhi adopted a stern attitude to pressure the British Government to quit India. It was towards this objective that Gandhi launched this movement.

Reasons for the Quit India Movement are follows-

The failure of the Cripps Mission (1942) had made it clear that British were not willing to offer any real constitutional advance to India during the War and would go on appropriating Indian help and men fighting for allied forces without its consent.
The popular discontent was growing because of rising prices and war-time shortages, was gradually mounting and the time for expression of this discontent had come.
There was an anticipation of an imminent collapse of the British empire.
The incidents such as Allied reverses and British withdrawals from South-East Asia and Burma, etc. confirmed this feeling.
The manner in which the British evacuation from Malaya and Burma had angered the masses.
The British evacuated the white residents and largely left the local population to their fate.
In order to build up their capacity to resist any future Japanese aggression, it was necessary to prepare people to defend themselves and their country for which a mass movement was needed now.
Public confidence in the stability of British rule had reached an all-time low.
There was a run on the banks, with people withdrawing deposits from post-office savings accounts and beginning to hoard gold, silver, and coins.
Since people were anticipating overthrow of British rule in near future, it was essential to mobilize them during such a time and ensure maximum participation and success of the movement.

The Congress Working Committee met in Wardha on 14th July 1942 and adopted the famous “Quit India Resolution.” After the approval of the Congress Working Committee, Gandhi launched the movement in August 1942. Addressing the Conference, Gandhi gave the call of “Do or Die,” either to get India free or to die in this attempt.

However, the movement could not continue for the long time. People were left without leaders, and in the absence of leadership and proper organisation, people could not stand for a long time before the mighty strength of an imperial power of Government. The movement did not get support from the Muslim League and the Communists, which also deterred the movement. According to Jayaprakash Narain, the movement failed due to a lack of coordination among the Congress people agitating in different parts of the country. There was also no clear-cut programme of action. Another weakness that can be seen is that it was limited only to peasants, students, and the lower middle class. There was no or less participation from the upper middle class as they were losing their faith in the Gandhian methods of action.

The Partition of India and its Independence

The Partition of India in 1947 was a significant event in South Asian history. It resulted in the division of British India into two independent nations, India, and Pakistan.
