The LGBTQ+ community has existed for centuries, not just in the West, but deeply rooted in the history and culture of India. The term LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and the “+” includes the many other identities beyond these letters. While the global conversation around this community began gaining visibility in the late 20th century, the truth is — people with diverse sexualities and gender identities have always been part of our world.

Even in ancient Indian scriptures and mythology, there are references to same-sex love and gender fluidity. There are stories where women were in relationships with other women, and men shared deep emotional and even romantic bonds with other men. Transgender people, often referred to as hijras in India, held a unique place in society and spiritual ceremonies. Yet today, many of them are denied basic human rights, respect, and dignity.

When Section 377 was decriminalized in 2018, it was a historic step. The judgment gave hope to millions that things would change — that we’d finally be seen as equals, not outcasts. But sadly, the social acceptance we hoped for is still far from reality.

Even today, many families disown their own children for being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. There are parents who forcibly marry off their children just to hide their sexuality from society. They fear shame, judgement, and social rejection more than they care about their child's happiness. In the worst cases, some parents even turn abusive or violent.

Bisexual individuals often face harsh criticism too. They are wrongly judged as being “confused” or “promiscuous,” as if being attracted to more than one gender is a crime. Transgender people continue to suffer discrimination in employment, healthcare, education, and housing. Their identities are questioned, mocked, or simply erased.

In many Muslim-majority countries, LGBTQ+ identities are criminalized. People live in fear, silence, and emotional pain. The constant rejection from society pushes many into depression, isolation, and even suicide. Isn’t it time we asked ourselves – what kind of society are we building by suffocating people for simply being themselves?

Fortunately, the world is changing. In several countries, LGBTQ+ rights are celebrated, not hidden. Pride Month, which takes place every June, is a beautiful reminder that love is love, and every identity deserves to be respected. Even in India, more and more people are coming out, finding strength in community, and choosing to live openly and honestly. But we still have a long way to go. More than 70-80% of our population still doesn’t fully accept LGBTQ+ individuals.

I, too, am a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It took me a long time to truly understand and accept myself. But once I did, it changed my life. I no longer want to live in fear or shame. And I don’t want others to live like that either.

We’re in a new era now — a time of change, growth, and awareness. It’s no longer enough to simply “tolerate” LGBTQ+ people — we must embrace them. We must raise our children with empathy, educate our elders with patience, and challenge the social norms that hurt and exclude.

Everyone deserves love, dignity, and the right to be who they truly are. Let’s be the generation that ends ignorance and begins acceptance. It’s time
