Lord Jagannath, Devotion, tradition, and celebration all meet on the streets as along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, embarks on a journey among his people. It is a centuries-old tradition that’s not just deeply spiritual, but also profoundly relevant in the world we live in today, especially when we think about how we behave on the roads. While the Lord rides in divine chariots guided by thousands with love and discipline, our modern roads, too, are filled with journeys, but often lacking the same sense of care, purpose, and respect for life.

History & Significance of Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra commemorates the annual visit of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, from their temple abode to the Gundicha Temple, about 3 kilometers away. After a week-long stay at the Gundicha temple, the deities finally return to their home.This journey back home is Bahuda Jatra. The chariots are pulled back towards Jagannath mandir with the same enthusiasm and fervour.

The Three Chariots

The deities are placed on massive wooden chariots and are pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri. Every year new chariots are built for this sacred journey. Crafted meticulously each year, the chariots of Rath Yatra are more than just grand in size; they are steeped in symbolism and tradition. Each chariot is crafted meticulously every year, following age-old customs that have been passed down through generations. The three chariots of Rath Yatra are:

Nandighosa (The Chariot of Lord Jagannath) : ● The most grand and majestic, standing at 45ft tall, Nandighosa has 16 wheels each measuring 7ft in diameter. Painted in hues of red and yellow the chariot is made using wood from specific trees.

Taladhwaja (The Chariot of Balabhadra) :● Taladhwaja is a little smaller than Nandighosa at around 44 ft high and has 14 wheels.The red and green colour of the chariot signify strength, protection, and elder wisdom.

Darpadalana (The Chariot of Subadhra) : ● The smallest of the three chariots, standing at about 43 feet high with 12 wheels, each around 7 feet in diameter, Darpadalana is decorated mainly in black and red, colors as red associated with Shakti, the Mother Goddess, and black with her power to ward off evil. The chariot's symbolism aligns with the spiritual message of Rath Yatra, emphasizing the triumph of humility over ego.

The Rath Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s accessibility to all, transcending barriers of caste, creed, or social status. By bringing the deities from the temple into the streets, the event signifies that the divine is not confined but is available to everyone.Today, versions of Rath Yatra are celebrated in cities across India, the U.S., UK, Australia, and Africa, among others, often led by the ISKCON community.

The Price of Recklessness on Roads

ShatayuOdisha Movement A few days before the Rath Yatra, the members of did a survey on the availability of beds in the hospitals of our dear city Bengaluru and here’s what we found. In our visits to hospitals across Bengaluru, we found a staggering reality: almost half of the city’s hospital beds are occupied by accident victims. These are not mere statistics. These are someone’s parents, children, spouse, brother/sister who end up with disabilities or loss of life due to a moment of reckless driving or a lack of road discipline. A few examples are:

● Two-wheelers racing without helmets.

● Auto-rickshaws jostling through red lights.

● Buses competing for space.

● Impatient honks, illegal U-turns, distracted driving.

All of this reflects not just a breakdown of law, but a breakdown of social responsibility.

Road Discipline = Fewers Accidents = Availability of Medical Resources for Those in Need

Driving mindfully and adhering to traffic rules is not just a civic obligation, it is a moral one. Every time we slow down for a pedestrian, wait at a signal, wear a helmet, or respect a traffic officer’s signal, we perform a small act of mindfulness and safety towards other human beings and ourselves. When accident numbers fall, we don’t just save lives on the road, we also free up valuable hospital beds and other medical resources for those who truly need them.

On the auspicious occasion we, the members of ShatayuOdisha Movement, extend our heartfelt gratitude to the traffic police of Bengaluru. These officers stand as silent sentinels on bustling intersections, enduring the elements, the chaos, and at times, the disregard of the very citizens they serve, all in the unwavering pursuit of order and safety.

Their service is not just logistical; it is deeply humanitarian. Every moment they spend managing traffic, preventing collisions, or guiding school children across busy streets is a life potentially saved. In a letter shared with the Bengaluru Traffic Police, we expressed our gratitude in these words:

“We wish to express our profound gratitude and salute your esteemed team for the unwavering dedication demonstrated in fulfilling the vital responsibility of upholding safety and order within our society. Please be assured that we stand in solidarity with your efforts, and we shall continue to keep you and your families in our thoughts and prayers as you work toward this noble cause.”

As a token of respect, we have sent Jagannath Mahaprasad to traffic officers and their families, a sacred offering for those who offer their energy every day to keep our lives safer.
