The hall was silent as Pujya Gurudev Adarsh Muni began to speak. His voice carried the weight of centuries, weaving stories of courage, sacrifice, and unshakable faith. These were not just names from dusty pages of history—they were living flames that once burned for our nation’s freedom.

I could almost see her—the proud figure of Rani Bakka—standing alone while her husband was away. Portuguese soldiers surrounded her, demanding she abandon her faith. But her voice was steady: “I will never change my religion.” That defiance sealed her fate. Her life was taken, yet her spirit ignited the people’s courage, and together they drove the oppressors away.

Then came Kumari Jayati Sanghvi, only nineteen, her eyes filled with the fire of conviction. On her college campus, she called out to her peers: “Let us celebrate Mahavir Jayanti.” At a time when such gatherings were banned, her words were an act of rebellion. The British heard, and they silenced her forever—but her fearless stand still echoes through time.

The story of Lala Hukmi Chand Jain unfolded like a scene from a war film. The British, humiliated by losses in panja, sought revenge on innocent villagers. Lala Hukmi Chand stepped forward—not with weapons, but with courage—shielding the people. Many were saved, but he paid with his life.

We remembered Lala Lajpat Rai, whose roar for freedom still resounds, and Veerchand Raghavji Gandhi, a Jain leader whose disciplined life and vision for education left a lasting mark. He would not eat after sunset, staying true to his principles, and even Swami Vivekananda honored him in a public speech.

Gurudev’s voice softened as he spoke of Tara Chand Barjatya and the Sarabhai family—Ambalal, Mridula, and Vikram Sarabhai. I pictured Vikram Sarabhai, eyes turned skyward, dreaming of a nation reaching beyond Earth. His vision built the foundation for ISRO, and today, because of his dedication, India walks on the Moon and reaches for Mars.

And then there was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel—a man who could have been Prime Minister, but chose unity over ambition. His choice reminds us that without sacrifice, there can be no lasting achievement.

Gurudev paused, letting the weight of these lives settle into the room. “In those days,” he said, “you could not gather, speak, or act freely. Today, you can do anything. But never forget—it came at the cost of blood.”

The lines of a song floated in my mind:

“Zara yaad karo qurbani, jo shaheed hue unki”

(“Remember the sacrifices, remember those who became martyrs.”)

And then came a quieter teaching, one that reached beyond history:

“Our desires are endless,” Gurudev said, “but I have learned to control mine. You too should control your desires and live with complete focus on your goal.”

In that moment, I understood—their sacrifices were not only acts of bravery, but acts of focus, of refusing to be distracted from a higher purpose.

We may not face the same battles they did, but we have our own struggles. Whether serving the nation, helping the community, or building a better self, we must carry their spirit forward—with discipline, gratitude, and an unshakable sense of purpose.

Our freedom is not a gift to be consumed. It is a legacy to be honored.
